If you mean sending the same messages to multiple people within a contact group as individual messages (not as a group message). Once you have created the group, if you swipe 'left to right' on the contact name, 2 icons will show up and email and text message option. This will allow you to send the same message to multiple people without creating a group chat.

Hi, yes once the group is set up with the required individuals. From your contact list overview, you will be able to swipe right over the group and select the message icon, this will send to those within the contact group without having to select everyone individually

You only have limited control over that. If you keep the number of characters below 160 and don't use any emojis, it should be sent as an SMS.
