Stop auto workout segments

I just updated my Apple Watch Series 7 to OS 9.0.2.

Now, when I use the workout app for an outdoor walk, the watch automatically adds segments at the 1 mile mark - the watch makes a noise, I glance and see Segment 1 displayed on the screen, and it temporarily blocks the workout view (running timer, etc).

Previously the watch would beep at me when I hit a mile and quickly return to the workouts view. If I cared to review different splits/segments, I had the option to view splits within the workout details section of the workout summary.

I don't like the new automatic behavior but I haven't figured out how to stop it. I've looked in my phone's watch, fitness, and health apps and searched online.

I'm also a bit surprised that if I wanted this new automatic (vs manual) behavior, I don't seem to have an option to customize when the watch creates a split. For example, if I did want automatic splits, I should be able to decide if I want it to occur at some other interval - such as 1/2 o4 3/4 mile - without a manual intervention.

Anyone figured out how to remove or customize this?

Hello Dragonflyhasquestions,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

Please use the steps as listed here to customize your workout: Customize workouts on Apple Watch - Apple Support

Add warmup, work, recovery, and cooldown intervals

You can tailor your workouts to include a warmup period, repeating work and recovery intervals, and a time to cool down.

  1. Open the Workout app  on your Apple Watch.
  2. Turn the Digital Crown to the workout you want to do.
  3. Tap the More button, scroll to the bottom, then tap Create Workout.
  4. Tap Custom, where you can do the following:
    • Add a warmup period: Tap Warmup, then tap Time, Distance, or Open. You can also add a heart rate alert to the warmup period.
  • Add work and recovery intervals: Tap Add, tap Work or Recovery, then choose Time, Distance, or Open.
    • You can add multiple work and recovery intervals.
    • Add a cooldown period: Tap Cooldown, then tap Time, Distance, or Open. When you choose Open, you can also add a heart rate alert.
    • Name the workout: Tap Untitled below Custom Title, then enter a name.

Note: If you’re doing a stationary workout—Elliptical or Pilates, for example—Distance isn’t an option.

  • Tap Create Workout.
  • The Create Workout button is active only if you’ve added a work or recovery interval.

If this isn’t what you were wanting to do, we recommend leaving feedback for Apple here: Feedback - Watch - Apple
