Magic Mouse gets jerky periodically

My Magic mouse gets jerky in motion periodically. It generally gets slow to respond although it will move. I've often had luck with blowing into the optical sensor area, but lately it seems that I need a new approach. I'm using a mouse pad that while not new, isn't particularly old either. It shows no signs of wear.
