My MacBook Air will connect to my WiFi router, but not to the internet. The firewall is set to allow all incoming traffic. Any ideas?

Troubleshooting Mac Wi-Fi:

A few thoughts to try...

I. Clear the Temporary Internet Files:

II. Restart your Router:

  1. Power: off the router
  2. Wait: 30 seconds
  3. Power: It back on

III. Boot in Safe Mode:

[Hold Down: shift key, upon boot], In Safe ModeLogin Items do not run at login, certain preferences are set aside, and damaged system files are then reset. So, once booted in to Safe Mode, wait 30 seconds, and then boot up normally, attempting another update install.

IV. Try a New Admin User:

What happens when you create a new administrator user, and log into it? Do you still get this error? If not, then it is likely an error with the current user. If so, then it is likely an error with your Mac.

Try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Power cycle the router
  • Uninstall all third party apps that claim to clean, protect, boost performance, manage, etc.
  • Uninstall all VPNs and Proxy configurations
  • Set the firewall to its default configuration/off

Check your DNS; domain name server setting in system pref, network, select Wi-Fi.

it will report something similar to the example below.

IP address 192.168.1.99

subnet mask 255.255.255.0

router address 192.168.1.254

dns address 75.75.75.75

to verify the dns address listed is correct, call your ISP; internet service provider and ask what the proper dns address is. There are many dns address you might get by using, but others don’t.

Call and verify, then write down your settings for future use. They have been reports in the past where some hackers change your dns address to their address so they can inspect and snoop your traffic before passing it on.

You are welcome.

Contact your ISP:

If you are renting this modem and/or router from your ISP, then contact them, as this is their device, and not yours.

About Internet Connections:

Just because you are connected to WiFi doesn’t mean you are connected to the Internet. Note that you might be using internal services. So, try using an external contention (Ethernet). This is the adapter to use: Belkin USB-C to Gigabit Ethernet Adapter - Apple
