how to report potential fraud

Dear xxxx xxxxxx,

Your Apple ID (xxxxxxxxxx@gmail.com) was used to sign in to iCloud on an iPhone 5s.

Date and Time: 18 October 2022, 11:48 pm CST

Operating System: iOS 10.2

If the information above looks familiar, you can ignore this message.

If you have not recently signed in to an iPhone 5s with your Apple ID and believe someone may have accessed your account, go to Apple ID (https://appleid.apple.com) and change your password as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Apple Support

I have never owned an iPhone and only have an iPod. This email claims to be from Apple and if so access is not from myself. How can I check

Could be spam, depending on the email it's sent from. If the email sender in the header is @apple.com, it's legit (but beware of falsified versions). Don't click on any links- senders can easily link https://appleid.apple.com to anything else (such as Google, in this example).

Welcome!

If you are viewing email on a computer using a mail client (Apple Mail; Outlook) you can usually hover the cursor over an address and see the true site from which the message was sent. Here is one in a older version of Outlook that claimed to be about my Apple ID:

Apple would never used a HotMail address.

If you hover on the Apple ID link it may show if it is correct or is a spoof.

Apple posted this about recognizing and reporteing bogus messages:
