Is it safe to leave iphone on charge over night? Does it effect the battery life or does it cause any other harm to the device?

It doesn't do any harm. Many people have done that for years, even before Apple introduced the Optimized Charging option. See: About Optimized Battery Charging on your iPhone - Apple Support
