iPhone Rings but Screen is Blank AND...

This question was asked here by Jenvuon on 8/29/2021, but the issue was not resolved. I am having the exact same problem on 10/18/2022. First, here is my operating environment.

    • iPhone SE, model MMX53LL/A (T-Mobile)
    • 64 GB with 50.27 GB available
    • iOS Version 16.0.3 (20A392)

This is the second iPhone SE that I've had with this problem, which seems to rule out hardware and point to a software or configuration issue.

Here is a slightly expanded description of the problem.

With the screen off (i.e. black) a call is received. The ringtone is played, but the screen stays off. Touching the screen anywhere, or sliding a finger across it from any edge, appears to hang up on the call. There is no record of the call in Recents, and no voicemail has ever been left by a caller in these circumstances. (I never seem to remember to double-press the side/power button to see what happens if the call is purposely redirected to voicemail.)

This is an intermittent problem. Maybe 20% of incoming calls are affected. I've been unable to discern any pattern involved.

RESOLVED! (Not a phone call problem at all!)

It was a configuration problem having to do with Messages. Here is how I had things configured.

    1. Same sound used for both Ringtone and Text Tone
    2. In Settings > Notifications > Messages the Alerts for Lock Screen and Badges were turned off.

Because of (1.) when a Message was received, it "sounded like" a phone call was coming in.

Because Message Alerts to the Lock Screen were disabled in (2.) the Lock Screen remained blank/black when the presupposed call was received - which was very mysterious. Equally mysterious was that the Phone badge did not increment when these presupposed calls were received.

Because of (2.), Message Badges were not displayed. They therefore were not incremented whenever the presupposed phone calls came in. If they had been incremented whenever these presupposed phone calls came in - and if I had noticed it - diagnosing the problem would have been faster and easier.

Also, as part of the diagnosis process, I looked at Recents (from the phone icon) to see who the call was from that didn't wake up the lock screen. Because there was no phone call, none was found in Recents.

SOLUTION

  1. Set separate sounds for Ringtones and Text Tones.
  2. In Settings > Notifications > Messages toggle ON Lock Screen, Notification Center, Banners., and Badges.

For good measure I gave each app its own sound.

Software issue is usually not "intermittent" it follows a pattern such as...

  1. From a particular number/region
  2. From a particular Carrier
  3. When you are on a particular network
  4. When your device is on a schedule Focus enabled
  5. etc etc.
