Dock icon - "Show recents"

All non-running apps in the Dock have a context menu item "Show Recents" (right-click on any non-open app to see it; running apps will not have this option.)

What is it supposed to do? In every single case, I get a "No available windows" message, regardless of whether I've recently opened the app. What is is supposed to show? Recent files? (That wouldn't make sense for Calendar, Contacts, etc). Recent windows? In which case, why doesn't it show anything?

Does ANYONE get any other result that "No available windows" when clicking on "Show Recents"? Can you provide an example where it works?
