trying to connect drawing tablet to computer, computer recognizes tablet as a keyboard and does not respond to clicks from tablet

I have a drawing tablet (no screen, connected via USB) that I have used on an older mac for months. Now, with the newer mac, I'm having trouble using it. First off, the newer mac uses USB-C, while the tablet uses the original USB, so I use a multi-purpose adapter (HDMI and USB). When I connect the tablet through this adapter, the mac recognizes the tablet as a keyboard. It responds to movement of the stylus, but not to clicking with the stylus.

I want to know how to get the computer to respond to clicks from the stylus

What is the exact model of your Mac and version of macOS used? You can get this information by clicking the Apple menu and selecting "About this Mac".

Also, what is the exact make & model of this drawing tablet? There is a chance it may no longer be supported on newer versions of macOS as it may require a proprietary driver from the tablet manufacturer.

You may also need to give macOS permission to access the drawing tablet by using the Security & Privacy System Preferences:
