This questions was answered by Urquhart1244 with regard to the first generation in Location of IR sensor on Apple TV 4K - Apple Community. This was in answer to a question about the first generation. The response in Apple TV IR Sensor Location - Apple Community just after the release of the second generation was that the IR sensor was in the same place.
All of which is to say - it's on the front of the device and slightly in from the left edge.
