For iPad models that support the second generation Apple Pencil, the Pencil will magnetically “dock” with the inductive charging pad of the host iPad. While docked, the Pencil will pair and charge with the iPad.
Older models of iPad that support the first generation Apple Pencil, the Pencil instead pairs and connects using the iPad Lightning port. The first generation Pencil does not magnetically attach to the iPad. Many third-party manufacturers produce cases for these iPads that include a slot (or similar) within which the Pencil can be stored when not being used.
