The ringtones exist in my iTunes Music folder. Where do I put them so they are ringtones again? The "Tones" category is now missing in iTunes.

Did you try Add ringtone to device, macOS 10.5 Catalina or later or Add ringtone to device, iTunes 12.7 or later as appropriate? Direct support for tones was removed in iTunes 12.7 so you can't get them to appear in the library any more, but you should be. able to add them to your devices.

The ringtones I created in iTunes ages ago and have been completely happy with disappeared from my iPhone and can't be accessed in iTunes after recent software updates.
