so I sold my iPod 5th gen touch last week and the buyer sent me a picture of this. I am positive I erased the iPod entirely so I’m confused as to why it needs a passcode??

Hello llaurenn,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities!
If we understand your post correctly, the iPod you recently sold is giving a message that the access to the account is encrypted and can't be read by Apple. We're here to help!
This means that only you can decrypt and access your information, and only on trusted devices where you're signed in with your Apple ID. No one else, not even Apple, can access your end-to-end encrypted data. End-to-end encryption requires two-factor authentication for your Apple ID and a passcode set on your devices.
You can follow the steps in the article below for a forgotten passcode.
If you forgot your iPod touch passcode
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
Take care!
