Excel from Windows to MacBook

How do I import an excel file from a windows pc to my MacBook Air? Do I have to get the Apple version of excel or is numbers close enough?

Numbers will read Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.

Copying the document to a flash drive or emailing it to yourself are two ways of importing the file.
