Hitting the darn return key...and NOT the space key

It happens to me all the time when I am typing a text/message. Instead of hitting the space bar, I press the return key. Why can't the return key be a small key (like all the rest) on the right side and expand the space bar? That would solve all issues that I and probably millions are seeing every single day of their lives. Is there a fix that I have been missing? Something like...check this box to make the return key small. Seems simple. Help...
