screen mirroring on the macbook air
i cannot use screen mirroring with my macbook air to my ipad. The ipad is not recognized. my ipad does not recognize my macbook air either. It "sees" it but does not connect to it.

It sounds like you are trying to screen mirror your Mac to your iPad, right? While you can stream content from your iPad to your Mac, there isn't a feature where you can stream content the other way around.
You can also use your iPad as a secondary display for your Mac:

If upgraded to iPadOS 16.1, Apple has not, as yet, officially added external monitor support to the new iPadOS 16 Stage Manager feature.
Look for Apple to, officially, release the extended monitor support, to the iPadOS 16 Stage Manager feature, in a future iPadOS 16 update.
