Vibrations happening on Do Not Disturb.

Have been using DND on my iphone for many years. Updated to iOS16.0,03 not too long ago. I have it set to automatically turn on, and I have a few exemptions for my family set in it. But in the last couple of days its started to vibrate with text messages from these people, where it never used to. Did iOS update change things? Is it normal for the phone to vibrate while on do not disturb. It never used to. The phone is set down with screen off. Watch is off and charging. ITs annoying as people send me messages for the morning but its now waking me instead.
