Apple Maps dropped pins vanishing

Hi

I have an extremely irritating problem, or just stupid behavior, in Maps, let me explain.

Let’s say I want to mark a few places around a lake that I want to remember and find again. As an example I can use this lake in Sweden (60,44571° N, 16,45805° E).

Let’s say I drop a pin at the NW side of the lake, and add to my favorites. Fine, the red dot shows there.

But now I drop a pin at the other end of the lake because there is a place I want to remember and get back to later. And add it to my favorites. Yes! The red dot shows there. But now the first red dot have disappeared, gone, vanished…. Hmmmm…. strange, so I try to drop it again, we’ll then it shows but the second pin disappears…. Crazy…

I’ve probably find the problem. The pins are both in an area with the same address, and it seems that just one pin at the same address is allowed in Maps…? I’ll guess this is the problem because in a city there’s no such problems with pins/favorites close to each others. But there’s also differences in addresses with very narrow borders, like in an apartment building with several entrances in the same building but for example different numbers even if the street is the same.

If I’m right in my guess this is really stupid behavior in Maps, because why not have the geographic coordinates as the reference….? My dropped pins around the lake is some hundred meters from each other, but that seems to be a conflict in Maps which delete my previous dropped pin if the next one is to close and in the same address, even if it’s hundreds of meters between them. Just utterly stupid…

An other strange behavior that is in some way is connected with the above problem, is that many of my earlier pins, added to my favorites, not shows on the map, no red dot to be seen. Strange… but if I drop a new pin at he same spot it will say in the menu “Remove from favorites” just like it already is a pin ther added as a favorite but not to be seen on the map.

I’ll think these strange things occur both in Maps on Mac and on iOS/iPadOS and on all my devices running latest versions

I’ve reported this strange behavior in the Feedback app, a few times, but nothing happens and no response.

So does anyone here have a clue about this? I’ll just think it’s really stupid having that limitation 2022 in a map app. And also I would like to be able to select different colors to my dropped pins/favorites. And also be able to select having my favorites in alphabetic order or latest first or such. Because now it feels quit difficult to find the right favorites you looking for.

Cheers

Hi Dr Tinnitus,

For help with using pins in Apple Maps, test the steps below for marking an unlabeled location. You can also find the information in the article here: Mark places in Maps on iPad - Apple Support

"Mark an unlabeled location

Touch and hold the map until a pin marker appears, then do any of the following:

  • Refine the location: Tap Move, then drag the map.
  • Save the location to your favorites: Tap the More button (to the right of the directions button on the place card), then Tap Add to Favorites. (You can give the location a name in your Favorites.)
  • Save the location to a guide you created: Tap the More button, tap Guides, choose a guide, enter a name for the location, then tap Save. See Organize places in My Guides in Maps on iPad.
  • Close the place card: Tap the Close button."

If following those actions and the pin continues to disappear test naming the pin prior to selecting a new pin location. The guide page here also has steps to help add and edit your favorites: Save favorite places in Maps on iPad

Not seeing the option to change the color, yet the name can be changed.

If the issue isn't resolved or answered from the information in the guide page, as you've already left feedback you can reach out to Apple Support directly to further assist.

Hello OrigamiFan1, and tanks for your input.

But sadly your advice is no help because that’s how I been doing it since long time now, and it won’t work, the pins disappears as I explained

Actually I generally love Maps, but in some cases it’s just utterly stupid.

For example, when you drop a pin, why on earth should be so extremely complicated to name it directly if I want…? But no, you have to drop the pin, choose add to favorites, the go to favorites and try to find it again among maybe hundreds of saved favorites. Because it’s not so clever that the latest added is on top… So scrolling scrolling to eventually find it and now you can rename it. Just stupid… And still the pins disappears as explained, and also not all pins shows even if they are in the list of favorites. Because if I drop a pin on a location where no pin is showing, the card will show “delete from favorites” because I’ve already dropped a pin there earlier but it doesn’t shows on map.

So why can’t we have a button for renaming a dropped pin directly, choose color, and add to favorites…? And that no pins just vanish because I add another pin not far away.

Mostly Apple use to be really smart and user friendly, but these things in Maps is really stupid
