I just updated my iPhone 11 to iOS 16.2 and now my lock screen is displaying just a black screen with the time, flashlight, and camera icons. I restarted the phone and verified that Settings/Wallpaper is set to select the wallpaper image that I have been using for years. After restarting the iPhone, the correct wallpaper was displayed but the next time the display went to sleep, it was again just showing the black background image.

Thank you, ProustGiulio, for your input. I have already created a customized lock screen photo (that I have been using for years) and have selected it in SettingsWallpaper. However, when I wake the phone from sleep, it is not showing that photo. Instead, it shows a black background with the time, flashlight, and camera icons.
Tried the standard fixes(reselected the same photo for display and even selected a new one, as well turned it off and back on). Still a black screen. It seems to be stuck in dark mode as well.
iOS 16.2 seems to fix the problem for iPhone 14Pro Max, at least. Due this week as I understand.
Who designed this? It is very frustrating trying to add two image for different screens (locked vs unlocked).
Re adding the photo only solves the issue for a short while then the black screen returns. I have done this many times now same results. This is only since the last update of 16.1.2
Update to iOS 16.2 and it should be fixed. 16.1.2 is indeed problematic.
Lock Screen picture disappeared after iOS update. Now have black screen. Restarted. Picture back but disappeared again. Keep s doing this. Grrr.
This has started happening to me since 16.2. Every new update brings a bunch of bugs. What are all the betas and public betas for????
For my 14 Pro Max updating to iOS 16.2 which has just been released fixed the problem. No need to reset, just update to iOS 16.2.
I gave found in some sites n apps when typing the line doesn’t move as typing to see what typed. Very frustrating
I updated still black screen until selected as new and used from pictures my old screen. If you hadn’t saved perhaps do screenshots of the original then use it to add as new?
Thank you for the suggestion of restarting and adding the wallpaper in the settings! It worked the kink out of reverting back to black screen!
Glad it worked! Now if they can fix the other 25 problems the upgrade changed! I know if at least three I found. Wonder what beta testing they did!
Is this issue fixed? Still I am facing this issue.
The upgrade to 16.2 appears to have solved the black screen issue. 2 days now and no problem. I reverted to my original Lock Screen and so far all seems ok. Great stuff!!
Try updating to 16.2. Worked for me
