iOS 16.1 Lock Screen Wallpaper Display

I just updated my iPhone 11 to iOS 16.2 and now my lock screen is displaying just a black screen with the time, flashlight, and camera icons. I restarted the phone and verified that Settings/Wallpaper is set to select the wallpaper image that I have been using for years. After restarting the iPhone, the correct wallpaper was displayed but the next time the display went to sleep, it was again just showing the black background image.

I just got off the phone with support at Apple with this same problem, my custom images I've had set for my Home and Lock screens are suddenly missing and I'm seeing a black background for both since the iOS 16.1 update. The first support person had me heading down a path backing up then wiping my phone completely, and restoring it to factory settings and reinstalling iOS 16.1. Luckily, they sent me to a senior support person, who diagnosed the problem -- and it's now solved. The issue had to do with my Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and Sleep settings. If you have those Focus times set, you MUST select a Customized Screen for Lock and Home screens, or else when those Focus times kick on, the screen settings will default to black (nothing). Once we figured this out, I reset my non-focus Home and Lock screens to my original photos and the issue has not reoccurred.

I am experiencing all the same things already mentioned, but in my case, it may (or may not) be related to Do Not Disturb. I do not use Bedtime to schedule DND, but rather simply have it scheduled as DND: On from 8:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m., off from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Has worked for years until upgrading from 15.7 to 16.1 on Friday. I had also created wallpaper for lock screen/home screen, and edited from chunky font for time display to thinner, obviously selecting the latter for use. (Kept the orginal unwanted set just in case, as it would be easier to simply modify than going back to wallpaper and starting over in the event it disappeared.

DND malfunctioned immediately following upgrade. It goes on (and, although doesn't always give you the quick notification at the bottom of the home screen, the crescent is displayed above) but often does NOT go off! While on, apparently it chooses to black out the wallpaper selection, which I hate, but this morning, for the first time, it disabled itself on schedule. However - it also immediately switched from my selected wallpaper set in focus to the original chunky font set! It has swapped sets at other times while working on this issue, but unfortunately, I can't be specific - particularly since I didn't realize that was what was occuring. I thought initially that it was simply changing the font.

I believe there is an interplay between DND, wallpaper (as seen in Focus), etc., and am pursuing, although now that it's reaching the engineering level, that usually ends anything productive. I'm glad to have found this discussion, and hope others will continue to post so we might be able to figure it out without the assistance we know won't be forthcoming.

I think I agree that the problem exists between the interaction of DND and 'normal daytime' screens. In my case, I use DND and daily wallpaper changes which are automatically changed using Shortcuts automations. When I made sure the automatic changes were not done at the same time the problem seemed to be solved. However, randomly (i.e. for seemingly no reason) I got black wallpaper after the change from DND is made, but confusingly, also at times other than when DND was involved. The last time it happened - three days ago now - I rebooted the phone (iPhone 14 Pro Max) and have had no problems. Note (1) that the only change was the reboot. I'm expecting this to go on until the next time I get black wallpaper and reboot to correct it. Note (2) that when I do a reboot the expected wallpaper appears without making any additional changes.

The December point update makes a couple of changes in how the AOD works with wallpaper and should (so far) fix the problem at least for those phones with AOD capabilities. A fresh install of the existing iOS might also fix the problem if indeed it is a failed background settings transfer between iOS versions - not a sure thing by any means, but possible.

Hey, it is possible to recover you image if you haven't replaced it with another one in the meantime (I think).

Try to follow the steps I outline in my post. I had the same problem as you, and I recovered my 7-ish year old background --> iOS 16.1 Lock Screen Wallpaper Display - Apple Community

Initially I thought it would break something, so I made sure to do an iCloud backup to my computer as well as iCloud, and because I've always found these 3rd party iTunes replacement apps a bit sketchy, I prefer to use the Windows sandbox mode, just in case.

Good luck!

So far, nothing has actually worked for more than - - - some amount of time. For me, the latest was 4 days. It failed after I had an app (Instagram?) open while doing something else on my Mac Mini. Upon returning to the phone the wallpaper was black. Rebooting failed to bring my selected wallpaper back. I had to run my wallpaper automation the restore it. Note: I use an automation to change my wallpaper every day, so I don't have a fixed wallpaper. DND turns off at 6 am every morning and the wallpaper changes at 6:30 am. I have a fixed DND wallpaper that comes on at 10: pm every day and changes my phone's wallpaper and watch's clock face. Based on today's wallpaper failure (turning black), I would guess that there may be some interaction with leaving an app open and having the phone enter the always-on display and then maybe timing out and being reopened. Again a sample of one, so definitely not definitive, but maybe a clue for any Apple tech?
