iOS 16.1 Lock Screen Wallpaper Display

I just updated my iPhone 11 to iOS 16.2 and now my lock screen is displaying just a black screen with the time, flashlight, and camera icons. I restarted the phone and verified that Settings/Wallpaper is set to select the wallpaper image that I have been using for years. After restarting the iPhone, the correct wallpaper was displayed but the next time the display went to sleep, it was again just showing the black background image.

I just got off the phone with support at Apple with this same problem, my custom images I've had set for my Home and Lock screens are suddenly missing and I'm seeing a black background for both since the iOS 16.1 update. The first support person had me heading down a path backing up then wiping my phone completely, and restoring it to factory settings and reinstalling iOS 16.1. Luckily, they sent me to a senior support person, who diagnosed the problem -- and it's now solved. The issue had to do with my Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and Sleep settings. If you have those Focus times set, you MUST select a Customized Screen for Lock and Home screens, or else when those Focus times kick on, the screen settings will default to black (nothing). Once we figured this out, I reset my non-focus Home and Lock screens to my original photos and the issue has not reoccurred.

i have the same issue two days ago. and my back tap functions suddenly go hay wire. i however resolve the issue by doing the same (took me a while looking for my previous wallpaper picture) and added it as new wallpaper. then it works fine. however, when my screen is lock and i wanted to use the flashlight, the flashlight function wont work unless i unlock the screen and tap on it. something is wrong here. i just updated to ios 16.1.1

I was in the same boat - my old wallpaper photo was no longer on my phone. But it was still there as my old wallpaper. I added a new wallpaper photo, then reselected the old one. It “stuck” for a few weeks, then went black again. So I repeated the same operation - add new wallpaper photo, then reselect the old one - so far so good. IMHO this is a good enough workaround until iOS 16.2 comes out.

I’m on iPhone 13 With the latest update 16.1.2 (I believe).

yesterday my Home Screen wallpaper turned black. I must’ve click something or had my fingers pressed down on the screen while carrying grocery’s in the house. I don’t remember what I had done.

I was unable to edit my default (1st) focus wallpaper or delete it. Any attempt created a new focus wallpaper instead of editing the existing focus wallpaper. I can modify the others but not my default wallpaper.

im in the US. I changed my Region to UK and saved it. It works! What about switching it back to US? YAy, everything is back to normal. I ended up deleting the broken focus wallpaper by swiping up and recreating it. So far so good.

good luck and thanks for the suggestion!

My ticket was escalated to a senior adviser. He basically told me to restore a backup from iCloud, which was made before the update to 16.1.

I do my backups on my PC using iTunes, so my only backup is from yesterday :(

Apparently, because there are millions of iPhone users, some will be expected to have a glitch of some kind.

Getting pretty fed up with the whole thing.

Well, that didn't last long. I installed 16.1.1 this morning and by noon the wallpaper turned black again. The phone had been on my desk with the always-on display showing (I didn't notice if the dimmed wallpaper was showing or had turned black) and when I swiped it on the wallpaper was black - no apps running, and nothing timed out. So it would seem that NO! 16.1.1 did not solve the problem. I've now reapplied the wallpaper using my automation and will keep track of how well it lasts - FYI: the automation changes the wallpaper every morning at 6:30. I might add that usually restarting the phone will bring back the wallpaper, but that fails sometimes, the automation is the only reliable way of getting the wallpaper to reappear. (Running my automation is basically the same as selecting a wallpaper, except it changes the wallpaper daily with a selection from Bing photos).

I have an iOS 8 with the same problem. The problem started when I power off phone for the night. After I turned phone back on, wallpaper screen was dark with just a hint of light coming through.

Performing a reset of phone by pushing the volume button up then volume down then push and hold power button until phone shuts off and continue to hold button until you see the apple logo return, release power button, the wallpaper screen was again visible.

if I power off phone normally, then power it up, the problem returns.

Again, I would say this is a bug in the update 16.1.1. Everything else is working fine.

Used same workaround but had to re-save the photo I was using (of a framed shot hanging on our wall) cuz I couldn’t find it in the gazillion pic library and then it wouldn’t let me crop it correctly (another bug?). Curiously the original was still being recognized in the settings folder “current” option (even tho it had been showing black screen) so I ended reverting back to that and it rendered correctly. Wtf Apple.

So from your lock screen (do not allow the phone to go to the home screen), press and hold on the lock screen. It will shrink the view and you can swipe to one you have set up. Underneath the view of the lock screen you added, there is a customize button.

Or, find Wallpaper in your settings. When you swipe to one you've set up, you should see a view of both lock screen and home screen as they go together. Both images should have a small Customize box at the bottom of the image. Click Customize on the lock screen's image and you should be in customize mode.

Hope this helps.
