facetime video black green light on

my new m1 has facetime video acting up. exclusive to facetime app. resolves when I reset it. I shouldnt have to reset it each time I want to make a call. The video shows black to me; the viewer can see it; the green light is on, but the video cuts out after only a few seconds. I turn it back on with the button in the app, it reappears then the video crashes again. the person can hear me the whole time and I can see them. what gives?! I have the latest software version.
