Why is there a black and gray sign flashing when I connect my apple pencil?

I have an apple pencil, gen 2, and my pencil when I try to use it will have a small sign flashing black and gray at the top of my screen title "Apple Pencil". I am currently updating my Ipad to check if that is the issue but I am unsure of what the reason may be. I haven't used my pencil that much and I need it for school work.

iPad Pro, iPadOS 14

Hello juicy_potato3s,

Thanks for reaching out to us in Apple Support Communities about your Apple Pencil not working as expected . We're happy to help by looking into this more!

The following support article provides some troubleshooting steps to try for this behavior: Connect Apple Pencil with your iPad - Apple Support

1. Make sure to center your Apple Pencil (2nd generation) on the magnetic connector on the right edge of the iPad. For Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (6th through 9th generations), remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil into the Lightning connector on your iPad. For Apple Pencil (1st generation) and iPad (10th generation), remove the cap and plug your Apple Pencil and a USB-C cable into the USB-C to Apple Pencil Adapter. Plug the other end of the cable into your iPad.
2. Restart your iPad, then try to pair again.
3. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure that Bluetooth is turned on.
4. On the same screen, find your Apple Pencil under My Devices. If you find it, tap Information icon. Then tap Forget this Device.
5. Connect your Apple Pencil into your iPad and tap the Pair button when it appears after a few seconds.
6. If the Pair button doesn't appear, wait for one minute while your Apple Pencil charges. Then try connecting your Apple Pencil again and wait until the Pair button appears.
7. If the Pair button still doesn't appear, contact Apple Support.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards.
