external display shuts down when lid is closed
When I shut my laptop the external monitor goes to black. What can I do about this ?

Shutting the display, by design, puts your Mac to sleep.
In some cases, provided you have the power adapter connected and a keyboard and mouse attached, it may transition to closed display mode.
