Using Different Accounts:
Unfortunately, as of this reply, Apple accounts cannot be merged. You can only use one account at a time on an Apple Device. So, if you never backed up your data, then it is gone. This is the link you should have used, prior to handing it over to him: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support. You'd perform as instructed, including the backup.
