find my

Why is it that when I share my location with my friends and family my email shows up and not my number? I’ve tried looking it up why but didn’t get a very clear answer. I saw one person say it’s because they don’t have your email address in their contacts but with my old phone my email never showed up when I shared my location. Another answer said go to privacy-contacts-make sure find my shows but it does not show on my friends phone and her number shows up when she shares her location with me

When you share your location with your friends their device needs to identify you and then represent you in their Find My. Part of this process is for Find My to check their Contacts app data. If your Apple ID (which takes the form of an email) is not lodged as any email address in their contact card for you the best Find My can manage is to represent you by your Apple ID rather than your name.

When your Apple ID is in an email field in the contact card in their Contact app your name then should appear in the Find My app.

This is sometimes muddled if a person has multiple email addresses (who doesn't??) and populates the email address field for your card in their contacts with something else - let's say a Gmail address - yet does not have your Apple ID email address. It all looks okay but you will probably find that Find My just gives your Apple ID email, adding to the lack of clarity.
