Voice Control Does Not Work On iPad OS 16.1

Hi,

I'm severely physically disabled and I use my iPhone & iPad hands free using my voice. I just received my new iPad and it turns out I can't even use my new device because voice control is broken. I spoke to support yesterday and they took logs from my device after discovering it's a software issue with iPad OS 16. They told me to reset/restore my device and that fixed it for 5 minutes and it kept happening again. No matter how many times you turn voice control of and on and restart your device you can't get it working. How can Apple release a new version of iOS without testing important features first? I'm very disappointed I just bought a device for $1,200 that I can't use. I just wanted to make this post to get everyone's attention to the issue so Apple can fix it faster.

I figured out how to fix it before yesterday and haven't had any issues since. I figured out that the bug only occurs when English Canada is selected as the language on Voice Control. I'm using English United States now (no difference haha).

In our case, voice control would not work after upgrading to iOS 16.1.1. It was set to use english(Canada). English(canada) was the only language that was downloaded to the device. Using the answer above we downloaded english(United States). That language downloaded — the downloading status icon was a full blue circle and full blue square. There was then a delay — 2 minutes or so, and a message popped up saying that voice control for english(Canada) — yes english(canada) - was now active. Then the download of english(united states) became fully completed. We did not have to change the language away from english(Canada). It appeared that the act of downloading a new language triggered voice control to do something that completed an activation of some kind that needed to be done after the upgrade to iOS 16.1 / 16.1.1.

See if you can roll back to iPad OS 16. It works for dictation with my iPad. You probably will have to ask support to help you with that because you have a new one.

It’s very weird because 10 minutes ago my dictation came out completely messed up and nothing like what I was saying, but now it’s working perfectly here, and I just also tested it in notes and it also works perfectly there now as well.

Hello JeanM1995

That sounds very frustrating, and annoying!

I have not noticed any issues yet - I use an iPhone 12 mini and iPad Pro 3rd generation both on release 16.1 - but confess I have not yet used Voice control much so it maybe it just has not failed yet!

Did Apple say if the issue was related to the M2 Chip? I see you have the 4th gen device.

We are looking at getting a new iPad so it would be helpful to know if you get a resolution. I will update this thread if I experience the same issue.

Good luck with the fix. I agree it should be resolved QUICKLY :)
