iPhone Voice to Text punctuation not working - iOS 17 Update

Has anybody else noticed that the punctuation when using voice to text is suddenly really terrible? I’m fully disabled with hand disabilities that make corrections not just difficult, but exceedingly painful, and suddenly voice to text is adding periods, where I don’t want periods, commas, where I don’t want commas, doesn’t capitalize the first letter on sentences, and is generally so much worse than it was before I updated.

The update I currently have is 16.1.2. I need it to stop. 16.1.2 broke my home screen, my ability to stream on almost all of my streaming services through HDMI, and my ability to speak and have my iPhone translated into a legible sentence. the home screen is just annoying, but the other two are something that severely impacts the disabled community, and I am so disappointed in Apple.

dear Apple, please understand that this is not just an annoying bug, it is a bug that causes me severe pain from having to fix the problem, and strips me of my ability to communicate clearly if I don’t fix the problem. I was so grateful for voice to text before, but not now. please do something.

Voice dictation is completely broken now. Commas and sentence breaks appear for no particular reason. Apple voice dictation has always been problematic, but now it is virtually unusable. Please, fix it.

I am so grateful to have read these messages from other Apple users. Ever since I updated to the last two updates, I have experienced the exact same issues with the voice to text. To be specific when I do voice to text it has periods where you don’t need them commas where you don’t need them capitalize certain things that don’t need to be capitalized. Then I have to go back to every single text or email and correct all of the mistakes. It turns out it is taking much more time to do this, then typing out a message which I do not have the capability of always doing.

I as well was disappointed with your response to. Kyzmett. Not only does he have a disorder and needs this to be fixed, but telling us to restart our phone, etc. is a bit of a slap in the face. This is a true issue. We are having and doing what you suggested is not fixing it. Believe me I have tried. I am not one to go onto these communities, but I am so frustrated with how much time it is wasting in my day That I had to Google if other people are having the same issue. And thank goodness, they are meaning you will hopefully do something about it. Please do something about this! Don’t just think there’s only a few of us it is affecting. It’s, just a few of us of actually taking the time to reach out.

I have not corrected any of the periods, commas, or capitalization and punctuation.

Thank you for taking this matter seriously and correcting it. It is not an issue with our phones. It is an issue with your software that needs to be corrected.

Thank you.

I agree. I am an English major, and the new voice to text grammar is absolutely unbelievable. Siri randomly inserts punctuation everywhere. – – commas, periods, capital letters, etc., and none of it makes sense in any way. How does Apple offer an update that makes things worse? It is now useless to try to voice text. Please fix this immediately, Apple.

When a knowledgeable user, comes to you with detailed information about what is wrong with their experience, and outlines in great detail why it is a problem that is not going to be solved by a reboot, do you insist on repeating the same script time and time again.

It is not a phone reboot issue when I can say the word “erupted”, but it constantly comes out as irrupt it.

Starting here, I will no longer be correct in manually. It will be raw voice to text.

i’m sorry, but what is an irrupt? Why would it be placed in a sentence or I’m talking about something irrupt Ing into violence? I’m no longer correcting the issues here, he will be seen all of my voice errors.

This was an issue introduced by one of your recent patches Apple, not a user error. I have been using an iPhone and Siri/voice to text for a decade now, service has degraded significantly.

Voice to text has become a joke. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you! My hands are fine so I’m choosing to type this myself rather than see the ridiculous interpretation of my words! My daughter lives in a different state so we text each other frequently. She’s a mom of a toddler and a newborn so obviously voice to text has been really convenient for her, but we’re both getting ****** off by Siri! We’re like, “what gen z’r without a clue of the English language came up with this!!” I was happy to find and read this thread, but also disappointed that there isn’t a simple fix. Hopefully someone will take notice.

This awful voice to text has been driving me crazy over the past months, it ended up being the push I needed to get off iphone. Life is too short to spend a bunch of time every day correcting text messages. And in this day and age this simply not acceptable. I’ve ordered myself a gorgeous Google pixel, and can’t wait to receive it in a couple of months. Googles voice to text is reliable and incredibly accurate, and all their other products are lovely too. Highly recommended.! :-)

Yes!! it is awful! I hate it! The description says commas will be used appropriately, but commas are randomly placed in the middle of sentences where they don’t belong, and I am not getting capital letters on my talk to text messages at the beginning of sentences, even after I say the word period! I hope this gets fixed soon. I rely on my talk to text a lot, and I am an educator. It is ridiculous when my text messages go out missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and having random commas throughout. Come on, Apple!

I agree that the biggest insult here is not just Apple's silence on this issue, but the silence and disdain reflected back on users. This is VERY real.

For Apple to close their eyes to make it go away, well, has happened before. It happened when I was developing software for the first Mac. It's happened many times over since, when Apple takes the zealot's approach that the faithful will overlook the flaws because, well, it's APPLE! The cool factor should be enough.

And it's not. Not in this day and age. Not ever. But they have market share and profits, which has led to smugness before with Apple.

So keep showing up at the doorstep. Keep demanding the unfulfilled promise of cool AND functioning for voice recognition.

Yes! If Apple were to enable Siri to add APPROPRIATE punctuation when translating speech to text, so that users didn’t have to say “comma” and “period,” that would be great — assuming it got the punctuation right. But Siri doesn’t get it right. And it doesn’t just make occasional, understandable errors; it makes ridiculous, inexcusable errors. It’s as if periods and commas are just scattered at random through my text. How in heaven’s name did this ever get into production?

Hi Kyzmett,

We definitely understand how essential it is that you're able to rely on Accessibility features like dictation to use your iPhone. Updates can often include fixes for unexpected behavior. iOS 16.2 was released since you posted your question, so let's start with getting your device up to date using the steps in Update your iPhone or iPad.

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

After you've updated, let us know if you continue to see issues with dictation, your Home screen, or streaming. We look forward to hearing the results.

Regards.

I concur, and suffer the same frustration regarding unnecessary punctuation. Since the latest update voice to text has become a joke. Unusable.

Also, since the update, touch assist has become unuseable on Google Maps and any app that requires Touch assist zooming.

Apple.com, stop updating. If it’s not broke, don’t mess with it.

Apple, latest update, has made it rotten to the core. Unfortunately!

You are correct, but honestly it's worse than that. I ended up trading in my iPhone this week because my 13 had serious problems and they kept saying they weren't any. And the technician have the colossal gall to stand there and act like she had never heard that there was a problem with the voice to text. Makes me think they have no plans to do anything about it.

Also makes me wonder why I ever left Android to begin with…

I have seen the same! Voice to text has all kinds of problems, although now that I am speaking about the problems, it’s working perfectly.

Ain’t that just the way?

One of the craziest things is that it kept dropping in proper nouns that I’ve never seen before for stupid words, like “has” gets typed out as Hass.

I think there’s every possibility that Apple is trolling us.
