iPhone Voice to Text punctuation not working - iOS 17 Update

Has anybody else noticed that the punctuation when using voice to text is suddenly really terrible? I’m fully disabled with hand disabilities that make corrections not just difficult, but exceedingly painful, and suddenly voice to text is adding periods, where I don’t want periods, commas, where I don’t want commas, doesn’t capitalize the first letter on sentences, and is generally so much worse than it was before I updated.

The update I currently have is 16.1.2. I need it to stop. 16.1.2 broke my home screen, my ability to stream on almost all of my streaming services through HDMI, and my ability to speak and have my iPhone translated into a legible sentence. the home screen is just annoying, but the other two are something that severely impacts the disabled community, and I am so disappointed in Apple.

dear Apple, please understand that this is not just an annoying bug, it is a bug that causes me severe pain from having to fix the problem, and strips me of my ability to communicate clearly if I don’t fix the problem. I was so grateful for voice to text before, but not now. please do something.

Hi Kyzmett,

We definitely understand how essential it is that you're able to rely on Accessibility features like dictation to use your iPhone. Updates can often include fixes for unexpected behavior. iOS 16.2 was released since you posted your question, so let's start with getting your device up to date using the steps in Update your iPhone or iPad.

Update your iPhone or iPad wirelessly

  1. Back up your device using iCloud or your computer.
  2. Plug your device into power and connect to the internet with Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > General, then tap Software Update.
  4. If you see more than one software update option available, choose the one that you want to install.
  5. Tap Install Now. If you see Download and Install instead, tap it to download the update, enter your passcode, then tap Install Now. If you don't know your passcode, learn what to do.

After you've updated, let us know if you continue to see issues with dictation, your Home screen, or streaming. We look forward to hearing the results.

Regards.

Oh my gosh, I’m experiencing the exact same issue, and it’s driving me absolutely nuts!!! I also have experienced MUCH more typos in the speech to text since the last update. I struggle with texting, but don’t have a disability and, I’m actually often (or ‘off and’ as my text to speech just entered…) talking pretty quickly, still there all this extra commas (or Comos ask my speech to text entered… ) everywhere.

Dear Apple (or There are Apple, as my speech to text entered…) please, please, please look into this issue, this is so incredibly frustrating. I want to throw my phone out the window on a daily basis now.

You're right. No one participating in this forum is "gonna" fix anything. This is a user-to-user forum. If you want Apple to know your thoughts, use the feedback page:

I realize you have to go through these steps, but I already updated my phone yesterday. The update fixed my wallpaper, which is a cosmetic thing, but the real problems that actually need to be fixed are still problems, just like numerous people are already reporting. I found another problem in there that wasn’t fixed along with the others… If you airplay something, and then close out of that stream, your phone continues to airplay and you can’t turn it off until you open another media stream to airplay. The option to move media playing back to the iPhone is grayed out Until you open another media stream.

so I still have to correct all of the mistakes in my text, and there are tons, and HDMI is still unusable. Please make the suggestion that auto correction on punctuation should be an option, because it’s so awful. It just makes everything worse. I left that last sentence break after “awful” in on purpose, because I sure as heck didn’t add it. I’ve corrected the rest of my text for the most part, but I had to correct at least six of those unwanted sentence breaks in these two paragraphs.

Yes!! I’ve also done all of these steps. It would be really nice if y’all would stop bouncing it back to the users and fix this problem. It has made voice to text virtually unusable. And whoever decided to have it not capitalize the first letter of a sentence, but capitalized anytime, you pause to grab a breath has lost their mind. Notice the comma after anytime… Siri inserted that, not me. I just left it so you could see it. Please stop telling us to take a bunch of steps we’ve already taken and fix the freaking problem!

Yes!! it is awful! I hate it! The description says commas will be used appropriately, but commas are randomly placed in the middle of sentences where they don’t belong, and I am not getting capital letters on my talk to text messages at the beginning of sentences, even after I say the word period! I hope this gets fixed soon. I rely on my talk to text a lot, and I am an educator. It is ridiculous when my text messages go out missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and having random commas throughout. Come on, Apple!

Completely agree. I'm a writer, and do a LOT of dictation while exercising, doing yard work, etc. The latest changes add punctuation marks incorrectly. If I pause for a second or two to gather my thoughts, it shoves in punctuation. It's wrong virtually EVERY time! It also transcribes so much worse now. I have noticed that if I wait 3-5 seconds, it corrects itself at times. But OMG my friends and I have actually been posting the horrid transcriptions for people to guess what we were truly saying, and there are some NOBODY can guess right!

this has been a HUGE hindrance to my life and my job. I didn’t realize how much I relied on voice to text to transcribe my work notes before I did this horrible update.

I’ve regretted doing the update EVERY SINGLE DAY SINCE my husband told me to update my phone. I am appalled this is still an issue.

yes, I have changed the auto punctuation and it is more than that.

My problems are that the voice to text is completely changing around what I say and rearranging the sentence and it never ever records the last words of my sentence. Or it will write it and then delete it. It is like it has a mind of its own.

….but it’s actually embarrassing. I cannot rely on it for my work notes anymore, or for sending a message when I cant see my screen because I’m often outside and it’s too bright where I am to read the screen. I can’t even rely on voice to text in the most ‘rough draft’ form because it’s actually just flat out inaccurate. It adds random words and just makes no sense.

I just wish Apple could restore the old voice to text that was so so good and actually made my life so much easier and better!

I went from being loyal to iphone because I used it for my work…and now I worry I need to find something else.

the county I work for is also likely to change the county phones from iPhone because this is impacting so many people.

I don’t understand why there is so little attention to this issue online. Am I searching the wrong thing?

I agree that the biggest insult here is not just Apple's silence on this issue, but the silence and disdain reflected back on users. This is VERY real.

For Apple to close their eyes to make it go away, well, has happened before. It happened when I was developing software for the first Mac. It's happened many times over since, when Apple takes the zealot's approach that the faithful will overlook the flaws because, well, it's APPLE! The cool factor should be enough.

And it's not. Not in this day and age. Not ever. But they have market share and profits, which has led to smugness before with Apple.

So keep showing up at the doorstep. Keep demanding the unfulfilled promise of cool AND functioning for voice recognition.

I never even thought about being disabled with these issues. I’m so sorry for you. I’m not disabled, and it drives me Battie!!! My issues are more along the lines of when I’m trying to correct some thing that I had voice text. When I try to put my cursor somewhere it highlights a whole **** paragraph. And it won’t move to just the word I need to fix unless I hold my space bar down and move it which would be fine, but it doesn’t work out the time it ends up just capitalizing a bunch of CCCC’s and just throwing them in there randomly! And now I have to try to get those out the same way and it’s just impossible and I guess it’s all been since the update before this past one which I haven’t done I have not done the latest. Anybody else having these problems?

In addition to everyone's comments, NOW the voice-to-text offers uncommon spellings of people's names and you have to change it to the basic spelling.

My experience has been different than yours.

I would note that there is no such thing as "no accent". Everyone has an accent. You may mean, if you're in the U.S., the "General American Accent', or in the U.K., "Received Pronunciation" but, they are just as much accents as a Southern drawl, a New England twang or Merseyside English.

I concur, and suffer the same frustration regarding unnecessary punctuation. Since the latest update voice to text has become a joke. Unusable.

Also, since the update, touch assist has become unuseable on Google Maps and any app that requires Touch assist zooming.

Apple.com, stop updating. If it’s not broke, don’t mess with it.

Apple, latest update, has made it rotten to the core. Unfortunately!

Voice to text has become a joke. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for you! My hands are fine so I’m choosing to type this myself rather than see the ridiculous interpretation of my words! My daughter lives in a different state so we text each other frequently. She’s a mom of a toddler and a newborn so obviously voice to text has been really convenient for her, but we’re both getting ****** off by Siri! We’re like, “what gen z’r without a clue of the English language came up with this!!” I was happy to find and read this thread, but also disappointed that there isn’t a simple fix. Hopefully someone will take notice.
