2017 27" iMac keeps beachballing then restarting!

I got a 2017 27" iMac.

3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

Radeon Pro 570 4GB

40GB 2400 MHz DDR4

macOS Ventura (but was happening with previous macOS)

I added extra memory some years back as I run Photoshop, Lightroom, Luminar, Google Chrome and so on (was also using FTP at one point), never used to have any issues but more and more so now when i'm on Photoshop or Google Chrome etc, it will start beachballing and the iMac will restart saying it was due to a problem.

I've tried to Google info about this but not really getting anywhere.

I have 2 external monitors attached to the iMac, again, nothing new, i've always had them even before this issue started, i've also tried taking out the USBs in the iMac and still getting the issue.

I've done a EtreCheck and it came back as:

Kernel panics This system has experienced kernel panics. This could be a sign of hardware failure.

I'm not sure what any of this means so i'm hoping someone on here can let me know how to fix this, or tell me what the issue is in the first place and so on.

I try not to keep a lot of things running at a time, things like 1Password I have running as I use it for websites I go on, things like the Stream Deck has to stay on, again I try not to run programs like Photoshop, Lightroom and Luminar at the same time, i'll always close 1-2 down while using the other.

But even simple things, like opening a small PSD on Photoshop and doing some design work, that will end up beachballing, or just going to open Chrome and so on....

So again, any help would be appreciated, I did notice the Logitech come up a bit when kernal was mentioned, again, not sure if this app (the mouse) is using any issues.

KP's are difficult to figure out as they may be caused by either hardware or software. On the software side I see some major issues that need to be addressed. You have installed a third party Antivirus app ( 2022-09-18 Antivirus One (3.8.4) ) and also a Cleaning App ( AppCleaner ). Not only are both 100% totally unnecessary they may be causing your problems. Mac OS does not require or benefit from in any way adding third party AV, cleaning, maintenance, VPN, Security or any other types of maintenance apps. At best they are 100% worthless and at worst damaging to Mac OS. Please locate the developers uninstall instructions for AppCleaner and Antivirus One and follow them to the letter. Then restart in Safe Mode and then restart normally.

On the hardware side, you have installed some third party RAM however you used low quality RAM, Corsair. iMacs are VERY sensitive to running high quality RAM and most experienced users only recommend either Crucial.com or Macsales.com RAM. After you have uninstalled the AV and cleaning apps and tested if your KP's continue then remove the upgraded RAM and run the Mac with the original RAM and see how it performs. If the KP's disappear then you have found your problem.

Last, you have a 2017 Fusion Drive based system. Fusion drives have a hard disk installed which are prone to failures. Yours in now nearing the 6 year old mark and could also be the culprit. You should test it by using the free version of DriveDX and test the drive at least 2-4 times. If ANY errors appear that means the drive is ready to be replaced.

Best of luck!!

What RAM supplier did you use to upgrade the RAM?

How did you end up with 1 odd 16GB module, instead of 4x8GB modules or 2x8GB and 2x16GB modules?

1) I would test your iMac for a couple of days with just the original 2x8GB modules installed.

2) Get rid of DrCleanerPro, DSLogin Helper, Antivirus One, Cleaner One Pro using the developers instructions.

3) Then startup the iMac in Safe Mode followed by a normal restart. How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support

Your EtreCheck report indicated both the AV and Cleaning app were still installed, if you think they have been removed run a fresh EtreCheck report and read it carefully and look for those apps! If they have any parts left then you will need to download the free version of FindAnyFile and search for those apps and get rid of them.

Regarding the 5 year old RAM, RAM can and does fail. So the only way to check it is to remove it and test with the original Apple RAM. As mentioned if the errors disappear then you know the problem is RAM related meaning it can be:

  1. Incorrect RAM or
  2. Failed RAM or
  3. Unseated RAM

In order to troubleshoot a problem you MUST be methodical and remove potential troubles (the apps, RAM etc.) 1 by 1 and thoroughly test until you have eliminated each item that has been pointed out to you! This will take at minimum 2-3 days to do, so please don't rush it.

It will help us get a good idea of what is causing your problem if you provide a report of your system, that way we do not have to play 20 questions with you. The report we are requesting does NOT provide any personal information and is extremely safe to use. Please navigate to www.Etrecheck.com and download the free version of EtreCheck. Once you have you downloaded the app and installed it, please run the report and save it. This report will help us get a good idea what has been installed on your system and help us be able to diagnose what may be wrong.

When you have your report, you can attach it when you reply to this message and we can then review it and help you determine what is needed to get your system running well again.

Did you just delete the apps or install fully according to the developers instructions?

You can check to see if you've removed all of the supporting files by downloading and running the shareware app Find Any File to search for any files with the application's or the developer's name in the file name.  For the mentioned software you'd do the following search(es):

1 - Name contains drcleaner

1 - Names contains dslogin

Any files that are found can be dragged from the search results window to the Desktop or Trash bin in the Dock for deletion.

FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages.

I bought the RAM on eBay I believe, when I got the iMac round 5 years ago, never any issues though as this issue now has only started the last couple of months, same with a friends 2012 iMac, she's developed the same issues around a similar time, just beach balling then restarting, I believe she has the AntiVirus and cleaners too..... and also regarding the RAM I wanted to get as much RAM as I could at the time and only had enough for them, was hoping to replace one of the 8's with another 16GB but again didn't have the money at the time and never had issues for years so didn't bother, again only getting this issue the last month or so.

I've deleted the AntiVirus and Cleaner One Pro, I can't find DrCleanerPro anywhere or DSLogin Helper. but again i've had these apps for years and never any issues so it's just odd.

Here is the new report I just did, again not sure where DSLogin Helper is, and DrCleaner Pro :-/ searched the iMac but nothing coming up... I did read that the Logitech software was causing some kernel panics too, I deleted the older Options software (I obv need the newer Options+ one) yesterday and it's not happened today so i'm not sure if it was that too, again having those cleaner ones for years it's weird to think if they're the issue.

Hey,

I've deleted the AntiVirus already, and the Cleaner One Pro, the AppCleaner I found better as when I was deleting apps before, i'd always end up finding files left over, where as with the AppCleaner there hasn't been any leftover files/folders when deleting, but as stated previously i've had these app for over 5 years and never had any issues, it's only now the past month or so the beach balling and restarting has started.

Also, again with the RAM this was done 5 years ago and again never had this issue in those 5 years of using this RAM, again it's just the past month or so, so something has happened within the past month but i'm not sure what, but again I just rind it weird that a friends iMac is having the same issues that happened around the same time, both beach balling and then restarting.

I'll download that DriveDX and try that, as obviously being a 2017 iMac it is getting on a bit, and my friends is a 2012 model, I do think maybe it is more hardware than software as again regarding RAM and the specific apps i've had them for years upon years and never had this issue until recently.

I'll get DriveDX now and test that and see if any errors come up at all, at least then i'll know.

Thanks for the reply.
