Stop displaying Apple TV + promos after mirroring via AirPlay

I use my Apple TV in my classroom to mirror what is on my iPad. When I turn mirroring off, it has started defaulting back to Apple TV promos. I need this to not happen. It is too distracting to my students, and some of the promo images might be construed as inappropriate. This is a big enough problem that I am searching for ways to mirror my iPad without the Apple TV.

  • You can put the Apple TV in Conference Room Display mode. (This can be locked with a Restrictions PIN number.) Then only the screen saver will be visible when nothing is streamed through AirPlay.
  • You can move the TV app from the top row to a lower row, then it won’t show any Top Shelf promo content. Same for the Music app. Only apps in the 1st row get to display Top Shelf (area above the apps) content when highlighted.
  • You can set for select apps what to show in the Top Shelf. Settings﹥Apps﹥[app name]﹥Top Shelf.
  • You can prevent auto-play of videos on the home screen. Settings﹥Accessibility﹥Motion﹥Auto-play…
