macOS Ventura 13.0, mail app 16.0 and gmail account - mail app often freezes requiring forcequit

Have used the mail app with gmail as well as an icloud mail and Comcast imap accounts for several years. There have never been any issues until just after my upgrade yesterday to macOS Ventura 13.0 which includes mail app 13.0. Troubleshooting reveals that mail app freezes on most receipt of new mail items from gmail. I have deleted and redefined the gmail/Google account, rebuilt the mailbox, etc. with no joy. The only way to "recover" is to forcequit mail app and hope for the best. The closest to stability I've found is to only operate mail app after loading the Chrome browser - which makes no sense to me at all - but this is not by any means solid.

Is there any published list of mail app 13.0 issues that I may/should peruse?

iMac M1 16Gb with oodles of free storage, vanilla Internet connectivity 900+ / 24. This was an upgrade and not a fresh install of macOS.

You can try —SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

For problem accounts the go to way to sort things out is to delete the account, then add it back.

Remove email accounts in Mail on Mac

Note—

IMAP accounts stay on the server, so no local loss, when you re-sync

POP accounts download and remove from the server—therefor save your inbox/sent box if you want them

On My Mac" is just that, local folders you created and moved mail into. So no loss

Thanks, but booting into Safe Mode accomplished nothing. The problem continued with no change as compared with standard mode operation.

Also, I have deleted the gmail account and re-added it several times with no change in symptoms. I've even removed the gmail account's Envelope Index, Envelope Index-shm and Envelope Index-wal files and let mail app rebuild them in the /Library with no change in symptoms. I continue to be stumped.
