iPhone 14 Pro Max new camera odd problem,

I work in healthcare and I sometimes have to take photographs of skin lesions through a dermatoscope which is a small handheld magnifier held against the skin and lit by inbuilt small LED bulbs to give a nice clear and bright image of the skin lesion. The image obtained can then be attached to the patient notes or sent for a specialist opinion.

I have only ever used my iPhones over the past few years to take such images by holding the iPhone camera lens against the dermatoscope eye piece/viewing ring.

Bizarrely when I now try to do the same with the latest iPhone 14 Pro Max, the camera image just "whites out" (becomes totally over-exposed),so you can see no detail at all of the skin lesion). Even when trying to adjust exposure with the on-screen slider to reduce exposure or the brightness the image provided by the iPhone 14 Pro Max just continuously massively over-exposes. The same thing happens with all 3 of the iPhone 14 Pro lens- normal, wide or tele.

I have never had such issues with my previous iPhone 13 pro or 12 pro maxes which I have now given away to family members! I had to bring in my old iPhone XS Max yesterday to work, and of course that takes well exposed and pin sharp images through the dermatoscope immediately with no problem at all. It is an odd fault afflicting the software or image recognition of the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Is it that it cannot focus that closely any longer? In which case the ultrawide lens should work best, but it still just keeps overexposing the image.

Any ideas?

Greetings markmaz,

We have a few suggestions to help get the photos you need.

Apply Photographic Styles with your iPhone Camera - Apple Support -- See of any of these Photographic Styles lessens the exposure.

Use iPhone camera tools to set up your shot - Apple Support -- Does using one of the built-in filters correct the exposure?

Change advanced camera settings on iPhone - Apple Support -- If Lens Correction is on, turn it off (or vice versa) and test.

Take Apple ProRAW photos with your iPhone camera - Apple Support -- If you’re photos are still overexposed, seeing taking them using Apple ProRAW helps.

If nothing has helped with the situation, please reach out to Apple Support to look into this issue further with you: Get Support

All the best.
