Old operating system

I have a 10 year old MacBook Pro. I am on the Catilina operating system that will not be supported by Apple. The computer works great but should I be concerned about security? if so what would be the best way to secure my computer on line? Also should i have any other concerns that I haven't even thought of? thank you!

Faithfully use Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, because at ten-years old, it could potentially fail on you without any repair support from an Apple Store, or Apple Authorized service provider as the hardware is now deemed obsolete.

Ensure that you have applied all security and browser updates in Software Update. That will provide you with a version of Safari that supports TLS 1.2 security which should last awhile. Unclear if Apple will issue further updates to Catalina prior to dropping support for it this Fall. Security is an ever changing factor…

Have your MacBook Pro set up in Find My so if it is stolen, you may have a chance of locating it…

Use long (e.g. 26-character) passwords and a different name than admin for your router, and different (just as long) password for your SSID access (if you are doing wireless). Same drill for accessing Apple's iCloud, other cloud services, and remote email sign-in. And use a different password for access to your Mac. Write these down and keep in a safe place for future reference.

Only download applications or application updates directly from the original vendor. This will nearly eliminate vectors for malware.

👍 +1 You said it all!

For what it's worth, I would add the following details to what VikingOSX already suggested:

  • Use 2FA with all financial & other critical services.
  • Never click any link in an email that purports to be from your bank or other financial institution even if it looks legit. Scammers have gotten very good at making their scam emails look legit.
  • Change your passwords at least once each year.
  • Assume every email, txt msg, attachment & link is a phishing scam unless proven otherwise. This includes known senders because even their systems could have been compromised.
  • Be careful with your web browsing and other online uses. Don't go to or use known or suspected sources of malware (certain kinds of websites are known to be rife with malware; you can probably guess pretty well what they are.)
