importing photos from Iphone 13 into iphotos on my macbook pro

We recently upgraded to iphone 13 and os 16 - but have an older macbook. We prefer to use iphotos to manage all of our pictures on the macbook but now (since the upgrade) - we are unable to import photos from our iphones into either iphotos or the photos app. It says it doesn't recognize the JPG file format. Any suggestions? I can import them onto the desk top from the cloud - and then into iphoto - it just doesn't seem right that that is how we have to do it.
