I wrote a long message on my ipad messaging app , hit the digital message icon by mistake and the message disappeared, it appears to he e been deleted. Can I get it back or does digital iMessage automatically delete what was in the message typed

Usually in Messages there is not an option to send or delete a message unless it is linked to a contact, or unless you activate the mic for a voice note and confirm to delete the typed text. That being said, you may be able to follow the guidance on this page to recover the deleted/missing message: Delete and recover messages on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.
Retrieve a deleted message or conversation
1. In Messages, tap Edit.
2. Tap Show Recently Deleted.
3. Choose the conversations with the messages you want to restore, then tap Recover.
4. Tap Recover Message or Recover [Number] Messages.
**You need iOS 16, iPadOS 16.1, or later to recover deleted messages and conversations. You can only recover messages and conversations that you deleted within the last 30 to 40 days.
