if your Apple ID is on your lost phone, how do you reset your Apple ID

My husband lost his iphone in the Cape Fear River...we got a replacement phone but how can you reset your Apple ID if you need your Apple ID to reset it??

Never mind- he kept playing with what he thought was his password and came up with the right one! Lesson learned- don't only keep your Apple ID/password in your contacts on your phone! Thanks!

You log into iCloud, then remove the lost phone from the list of devices. That removes it from your account. I'm not sure why you are asking about resetting your Apple ID. What is wrong with your Apple ID?

Thanks for your reply....Asurion Rep has removed the lost phone and removed it from the account. We have the new phone, which requires the Apple ID before allowing us to reset the Apple ID? The Apple ID was in his Contacts on the lost phone so he doesn't have the Apple ID. The question is, I guess, how do we create a new Apple ID password without the old Apple ID password?
