Why the new smaller cord plug on the new style transformer on the new iPhone. Is the wall plug transformer different than my older wall plug transformer that uses the old style larger connector

USB-C connectors provide more power or much more power (up to 240 watts) than the older USB-A connectors (5W, 10W, or 12W), and pretty much everything is shifting from USB-A to USB-C connections for this and other reasons.

This allows the same USB-C charger—a charger with sufficient wattage—to charge an iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Any currently-available iPhone can be charged with an older USB-A charger and Lightning cable, or with a newer and higher-wattage USB-C charger and cable.
