Apple pencil neither connects nor charges

I live in a small town in Germany where there are no apple stores. I was in the UK yesterday and took the opportunity to buy a new iPad (10th generation) along with the Apple pencil.

Now the issue is that the pencil will neither charge nor connect to the iPad. I have had it magnetically attached now for over an hour. It also does not show up in the Bluetooth devices list.

I have restarted the iPad, currently also updating it to 16.1 but am out of ideas on how to make it work—starting to suspect that the pencil hardware is faulty.

This brings me to my main question. Considering I live a bit remote, how can I return/replace this iPad pencil with a functioning one? I basically brought this iPad to read and take notes around research papers, so it is pretty useless for me at the moment without a working pencil.

And therein likely lies your problem; the new iPad10 only supports the first generation Apple Pencil. The second generation Pencil cannot be used with the iPad10. The first and second generation Pencil use an entirely different pairing and charging interface.

A second generation Pencil can only be used with iPad models that have the magnetic/inductive dock that is exclusively designed for the Pencil. Charging and pairing is controlled via the iPad magnetic dock.

The first generation Apple Pencil uses the physical Lightning port of the Pencil and the host iPad for both pairing and charging the first generation Pencil. The first generation Pencil can also be charged using an inline charging adapter and the iPad’s Power Adapter. With the sole exception of the iPad10 - that requires a special adapter - other models of iPad that feature a USB-C port lack any means by which to pair with a first generation Pencil.

In summary, the Apple Pencil models are not interchangeable - and can only be used with the iPad that has appropriate internal hardware.

As described, the store staff do appear to have made a mistake. In the circumstances, I can only suggest that you contact Apple Support and ask for advice.

You can contact the Support Team using the Get Support link at top-right of this page. Alternatively, you can initiate and manage your support cases using the excellent Apple Support App. If not already installed on your iPad, the App can be downloaded from the App Store:

I told him that I would be using the iPad to take notes and he sold me this along with the folio. It is not like I picked up those items and took them to the cashier. He sold me the whole set as a recommendation.

I really do not like putting the onus on the client for this.

Anyway, I will book a train to Frankfurt tomorrow and return everything. Will cost me like 100 Euros just for this privilege :( I just hope they will take this as it was purchased in the UK. This is also what the guy had told me but I am not sure if I can trust him on this either.

Sorry with my rant, I forgot to thank you for pointing out the problem :) Thank you!
