Battery drain using carplay Apple Maps on iOS 16.1

When using Apple Maps app with wireless CarPlay, on iOS 16.* the battery drains too fast and the cellphone becomes too hot.

When using other gps app like Waze or even Google Maps, this does not occur.

Any one else having this problem?

FYI, I am having the same problem and called Apple tech support to report the bug. The reply was this was the normal behavior for the Maps app. According to the person I talked to, you have to force-quit Maps after ending navigation if you won't want your battery to be drained to nothing in an hour or two after arriving at your destination.

I used the form to report a bug, but I imagine thousands need to report it as well before they'll do anything.

same here on all verison from ios 16, iphone 12 pro.

i probably found workaround to turn off location services while the app is in background or what works for me is after unplugging phone from car, i go to the maps app, cancel all navigation and searches, close the app via app menu (killing tha app) then it stops to drain the battery. unfortunatelly i always forget to do it🤣🫣

anyway, its terrible bug, i hope they fix it very soon.

Hi pflarini,

For help with view operable temperatures and warmth when using Apple Maps view the information below found in the article here: If your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch gets too hot or too cold - Apple Support

"If your device gets too warm

iOS and iPadOS devices have built-in protections to prevent overheating. If the interior temperature of your device exceeds the normal operating range, your device will protect its internal components by attempting to regulate its temperature. Here are some of the higher ambient-temperature conditions and activities to avoid, because they might cause your device to change performance and behavior:

  • Avoid leaving your device in a car on a hot day.
  • Avoid leaving your device in direct sunlight for an extended period of time.
  • Avoid using certain features in hot conditions or direct sunlight for an extended period of time, such as GPS tracking or navigation in a car, playing a graphics-intensive game, or using augmented-reality apps.

If needed, check your iPhone battery health and performance with the help f the article here: iPhone Battery and Performance

Same here but it also happens on google maps, it sounds from what I can find online that this is iPhone 12 specific. Pretty unacceptable, especially if I Charge at the same time I get the hot thermometer and the phone goes in brick mode until it cools down (losing navigation and having to fiddle with the phone while driving is obvioulsy a pretty bad idea)

I am having this issue and started when I got my Ford F150. Wondering if this has anything to do with the type of vehicle or any configuration settings on my truck. This morning I didn't get in my truck but think it connected becuase I was near it in the garage and then it drained my battery down to about 60% in less than an hour and my phone got very hot.
