After adding a new wallpaper photo the problem disappears, when I returned to the original wallpaper photo the problem returned immediately. Problem seems to be with the photo, iPhone works fine with the new photo.
My wallpaper on my Home Screen disappeared (was a photo of my mother). I shut down my iPhone completely, restarted, and it came back. We will see if it keeps happening…
The only solution I’ve found to date is to turn the phone off and on again. However, it’s a temporary fix as the problem recurs for no apparent reason. I’m hoping this is a bug from the latest iOS release and will be fixed in the next one.
Think I might have found a cure.
On the home screen press and hold until screen changes. Press customise then new then back out by pressing X.
My screen hasn't gone to no wall paper for about 4 hours now!
Oh no! I hope your iPhone corrects itself and stops.
After I initially posted, an iOS update released (there’s been several lately and that’s odd), I updated my phone and the disappearing wallpaper problem vanished.
The latest IOS update 16.1.1 seems to have cleared up my disappearing wallpaper issue. Strange, but glad the problem has gone away, too.
Hi Knowthums,
Do you still have access to the photo used for your wallpaper? If so, for help with changing your wallpaper on iOS 16, test the steps below found in the article here: Change the wallpaper on your iPhone - Apple Support
"Add a new wallpaper for your Lock Screen or Home Screen

Cheers.
I just updated yesterday from iPhone 12 Pro to iPhone 14 Pro Max. I didn't have this problem at all on the 12.
Now I get this issue. It can be resolved by restarting the phone, but eventually the wallpaper will disappear again. Done this about 6 times now!
There does seem to be other websites showing this as a known issue, although 16.1.2 (which both my phones have/had) has not fixed it - only seems to affect my newer iPhone 14 Pro max for some reason. Maybe 16.2 will fix.....
Update - since installing 16.1.1 the issue appears to have gone away - fingers crossed that I’m right and don’t see a recurrence of the issue 👍🏻
For me it started randomly during today, but was fixed by forcing an update to 16.1.2.
This just happened to me turned my phone off and back on and it came back. Used my iphone14s all afternoon and randomly disappeared again. If people were complaining in October and it’s January 8th shouldn’t it be resolved by now?
I changed my wall paper to a different picture and it stopped disappearing.
My 2 iphones are on 16.2 since 16.2 was available, and one started having this problem 2 weeks ago, and the other one started today. Restarting phones brings back the wallpaper, but it would randomly disappear for no reason. These wallpapers were set up from iphones 2 generations ago, and it has migrated without a problem until now. I hope a permeant solution will be in the next update. We pay a lot for these phones and should not rely on workarounds for fixes.
Same thing happens on my wife’s phone on iOS 16.2. I don’t have the issue but I use the rotating photos wallpaper option. If she reboots her phone the photo will come back but blank out again in a short amount of time. Very frustrating.
