MacBook Pro 2012 Model number A1398

I am tired of having to replace my MagSafe 85watt charger every 12-18 months because of cable deterioration.........can I use a usb C to MagSafe 2 and a separate USB C plug to keep my battery topped up?? Does anybody else suffer the same cable problem?
