Ventura 13 Power Events

Recent Upgrade to Ventura 13. Noticed in About this Mac, More Info, System Report, Power, there are Power Events showing suggesting Wake ups at certain times shown below. These did not occur in Monterey. Any thoughts?

In the meantime I found a solution to get rid of the power events. By "I found" I mean actually I found this thread:

Reminders app waking mac from sleep - Apple Community

So I tried it!

Behaviour before the fix:

  • "pmset -g sched" reports our beloved friends

[0] wake at 12/17/2022 00:41:44 by 'com.apple.alarm.user-visible-

com.apple.CalendarNotification.EKTravelEngine.periodicRefreshTimer'.

  [1] wake at 12/17/2022 19:23:54 by 'com.apple.alarm.user-visible-com.apple.acm

  • "sudo pmset schedule cancelall"
  • "pmset -g sched" -> all good!
  • put Mac to sleep
  • wake it up by keystroke
  • "pmset -g sched" -> bad again

Now the fix:

"sudo pmset sched cancelall"

AND

"sudo chflags schg /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist"

"This prevents the system from updating the file and my MacBook no longer wakes to reminder events. Needles to mention that it prevents all scheduled system events like sleep, power-on and such."

"I recommend removing the flag before a system update:"

"sudo chflags noschg /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist"

Behaviour AFTER the fix:

  • "pmset -g sched" -> all good!
  • put Mac to sleep
  • wakeup Mac by keystroke
  • "pmset -g sched" -> all good and hope it remains as it is...

Will see tomorrow what "pmset -g log" reports...

Good luck to all...

The acmd wake might have multiple sources. One of them is certainly calendar alarms.

If something is draining the battery, contact Apple Support. If they have a bug in the current version of Ventura, they won't know until many people start reporting it through Apple Support or the Genius Bar. The only people here who work for Apple are the moderators and helpers that try to resurrect forgotten posts.

For me it’s not related to any sync across devices.

I wiped / reinstalled macOS Ventura on my old 16” MBP Intel Core i9, I didn’t sign into my iCloud and the exact same power events showed up…

So it’s clearly something to do with Ventura because I never noticed this before the update and I check the power stats quite often.

How can we report this to Apple?

Dec 16, 2022 3:04 AM in response to vsw62

FYI, I'm on the newest macOS also.

Every few days randomly I would check the Power Events, and I noticed it's never been empty again. Either just one or three, max four I've seen. One Calendar (sometimes not there for me), but the acmd can range from 1-3.

I tried getting rid of Calendar widget also, but I just ended up keeping one M Calendar and said F it.

I don't think I updated my self here but I'm glad my Optimized Battery Charging is working again. From people saying to turn off Screen Time, I left it on and said F it. I'll explain below.

I have the MBP on most hours during the day, even if I step away for lunch or go out to pick up kids (while it sleeps) so if the OS wants to be awake, whatever. And by night I shutdown. I mean, with the "Reopen windows..." feature, plus turning on takes less than 30 seconds, it's not going to be end of the world. My battery have been staying at 80% since Monday so that's really good. I do wish I can put it to sleep and not shutdown because I remember I had it boot for 15 days once, and that was always by night unplugging. But knowing every morning I get -9%, no thanks.

BTW, in another thread someone said they checked the computers at a shop and they all had these Power Events too. So clearly it's on every computer.

I just wish there was a real sleep mode where nothing can wake it up besides the lid open, or some kind of button click on a wired keyboard (when on clamp shell mode). I say this about the wired keyboard because and I think I mentioned this before in this thread that with

pmset -g log | grep -e " Sleep " -e " Wake " | tail -n 50

I see keywords like bluetooth and SDXC (and yes I have a SD card in the slot) so all these are also waking it every 10-20 mins for 4-5 times per hour!! So basically the computer is waiting to expect my wireless keyboard to connect multiple times per hour turning it sleep? That's not cool!

I've yet to try this, but I wonder if you connect a wired keyboard to a computer that's off if it will turn it on? Because for clamp shell style users with the MBP standing up that must suck because you have to always open the lid first.

Dec 16, 2022 2:39 PM in response to vsw62

I know, I meant it's a good thing to go wired for everything because we're so depending on wireless nowadays.

Yes sir, since the first day of release. But if you've read from the beginning of this thread, I noticed something weird since like mid Monterey already, and as for me, Optimized Battery Charging was not working for a while for me.

The most extreme would be for you to try turning off wifi/bluetooth when going to sleep. Try Safe mode for five mins. Try removing the Calendar widgets. And same like you I don't use the Calendar too. There might be some holiday/birthdays synced on some accounts for me but yeah it's mostly left default. And lastly, anything left plugged in would drain or keep it awake. That's what I was told. But again, I gave up caring. But would be interested to see if someone found a way to put a stop to this.

After 2464 views, and 75 comments, still not enough to get Apple's attention I guess. For whoever that make future reports to Apple feedback, remember to drop the link to this thread for them!

Why we can't just get the macOS to stay asleep besides Find my Mac (for some of us that want it). From all that I can gather, I think you truly have to unplug all usb-c/turn off bluetooth (even wifi?) for the Mac to stay asleep.

They should just give us a toggle area to allow what to wake and period.

This weekend my MBP was off. I forgot my monitor lamp was plugged in when I shutdown so it stayed in. I lost about 8% when I turned on today. Turned off at 79% to find it at 71%. Within 10% that's no big deal, but for this type of battery that is not easily removable I don't want to play around with this battery.

Nov 22, 2022 3:54 PM in response to Daniel Wieder

Nope, don't have the time to look into this, but every time I jump on the computer I check:

pmset -g log | grep -e " Sleep " -e " Wake " | tail -n 50

And yeah always the same. But speaking for my self here, when I do:

pmset -g log | grep "Wake Requests"

I get more than just the two/three Power Events. Here's just one hour of it.

I don't really understand all this (same like you guys) and don't know if it's bad, but I do know that I had my computer in "sleep" all through out the day time, and at night coming on it says 89%. As in 7am 100%, 89% at 11pm.

I also wanna ask y'all about the "Optimized Battery Charge", you guys have it set to on? I'd assume so, and so do I, but for probably a month or so I haven't seen the battery drop to 80% and sit there for a while. It's always trying to reach 100%. So it's not working. And I did have a good schedule when I would switch on/off. Maybe has to do with Screen Time being off?

But just a moment ago, I saw an option in Displays (because I'm using another monitor so mostly clamp shell mode) > Advanced... > Battery & Energy > Prevent automatic sleeping on power adapter when the display is off, I used to have it on, but will try it off. But when I put the MBP to sleep I usually unplug.

This is a mess...

Nov 16, 2022 2:18 AM in response to Old Toad

Let me be the first to say thanks for writing all the above, and I'll give it a try later.

Thing is, I (or I think I could speak for all of us) didn't change anything in the settings since upgrade to Ventura. I would note I never even knew about those Power Events until digging around about battery drain. It probably is affecting everyone, but they just don't know it (talking about regular consumer).

As for the image you posted, no, on new macs there is not Power Nap. And the other settings, yes I've turned everything off if possible. We just want the computer to sleep and do NOTHING.

Last night I closed all apps, and did

sudo pmset schedule cancelall

just before sleeping (with 100%), and wake up 7 hours later with 93%.

This morning first thing I did was:

pmset -g log | grep -e " Sleep -e " Wake " | tail -n 50

And got this:

Sorry if it's too much.

As for my situation, it seems to indicate bluetooth, and the AppleSDXC. So I guess I have to unplug everything?

Here's my battery status. As you can see, it's slow, but it just drops after few hours. Some weekends when I'm not using the computer and it stays asleep all weekend, I'd expect it to be at least 90% but it's more like 30-40%.

As for the Power Events, if anyone know if it's because of a slider we have on/off let us know so we could stop the drain. Thanks!

Nov 16, 2022 2:27 PM in response to Jun427

The calendar travel alarm I mentioned above was not set for my Mini which wasn't sleeping. However, I looked on my MBP and it had both the acmd alarm and the Travel Event set within the same hour.

I created several events on my Mini and it did not register any power events.

My MBP had entries for each alarm I created, and for the Travel alarms. The regular events were acmd.

The times didn't make any sense, though.

It also had about sixteen entries for a delayed email send I tested a while ago. They were all just duplicates.

My Mini has two wake events for my weekly CCC backups.

Nov 23, 2022 6:57 AM in response to Daniel Wieder

I have mine set to Never. I think I changed it to this recently. Recently as in when I noticed the drain, but this doesn't really seem to make much difference. I'll give Only on Power Adapter a try and will report back tomorrow.

I got three power events scheduled. Two which are the same so it's actually just two. But what's wild is the com.apple.alarm.user-visible-com.apple.acmd.alarm

is set for 11/26 so in few days from now! But again, you could wipe the events, but they just appear again.

One thing I missed from "vintage" Macs is the on/off light indicator on the opening button in the 2008 MBP. At least you know when the computer is asleep/on/off. When you close the lid of the new ones, should be going to sleep, but no clue!

But yeah why can't the "Wake for network access" just be the one and only button to have your computer either wakes for updates etc, or just completely asleep and end of it. Maybe caused by a glitch on Ventura or another setting overriding the setting?

Nov 24, 2022 6:09 AM in response to Jun427

Instead of the Genius Bar, I think talking to support and getting to a Level 2 person would be more helpful. If they are not aware of the problem, they can grab logs and share with the development team to track it down. I have had some success when dealing with issues. And it would be a lot easier dealing with support than trying to go into an Apple store during the holiday season.

Nov 25, 2022 4:45 PM in response to Daniel Wieder

Here's a mark down what I will attempt.

First, put the MBP to sleep with no apps running, and remove those widgets, and run

sudo pmset schedule cancelall

before sleeping and see.

If at the usual time I go on the computer tomorrow and I see less drain than good sign so I'll do all the above on the ones below.

Second, turn off Bluetooth and maybe Wifi? And of course:

 sudo pmset schedule cancelall

Third and final, all the above.

I was thinking of leaving Screen Time on for more than a week to see if it actually has something to do with the Optimized battery charging. Like I said, don't know about you guys, but I've not seen it drop to 80% in a long time!

Nov 26, 2022 5:14 PM in response to Daniel Wieder

Some strange news to report.

So I boot into Safe Mode earlier to try. After twice re-entry, I didn't do much on the desktop screen, just looked at the Notification Center which I rearranged a few things but still have M Calendar and few weathers etc. Went to punch in the usual

pmset -g log | grep "Wake Requests"

And same BS.

I thought it's done so I shutdown and restarted. Turn on, the usual mds_stores running wild in the beginning. Then went to check the Power Events by the app, and wtf, only the acmd and only one!
