Cmd-Click not working in TextEdit

As of a couple of hours ago, I am no longer able to select non-contiguous text in TextEdit. I am able to select non-contiguous text in other apps, browsers, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel. I have quit all running apps and done a full shutdown and restart. That did not fix the issue. I'm sure it's probably something simple and obvious. Anybody have any ideas? BTW - just updated to Ventura 13.0 (22A380) a few days ago.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I still intend to try Old Toad's suggestion. I would like to know what happened to my reply to Luis Sequeira1's original suggestion.

I just tried to duplicate what you posted on my wife's High Sierra iMac and it does allow you to select discontiguous text with the Command + click keystroke combination.

I truly appreciate the responses and suggestions I have received regarding this issue. I generally do not use third-party software unless absolutely necessary. I've been an IT person for 50+ years (now retired), and a Mac user for 37 years. I have had the best luck when keeping my machines free of unnecessary software. I use MS Office, SketchUp, and whatever utilities are required by whatever printer I am currently using. I continue to use TextEdit because it is a quiet powerhouse of a text editor, and being a MacOS intrinsic app, incurs no additional cost. On some projects, I have had a many as 50 text document windows open at a time. I have continued to use TextEdit, without the ability to select non-contiguous text. I've more or less gotten used to it, although I miss the ability that seems to have been taken away in the Ventura version (or very shortly after Ventura came out. It makes no sense why that feature would be pulled). As time has allowed, I have tried all the suggestions regarding Safe Mode and even reinstalling the OS (what a PITA). The feature is still not available. When I absolutely need to use the ability to select non-contiguous text, I transfer the necessary docs to my older iMac and do the editing using Screen Sharing. There have been quite a number of times over the years when it seems to me that Apple is misguidedly alienating loyal users by dropping features that make Apple's MacOS stand out, but then I get stuck working on a project that requires that I use a laptop or desktop using the other mainstream OS, and I quietly repent my anti-Apple thoughts. There are still a few of features that I miss that went away when MacOS went from System 9 to OS X, although, since I had used Unix on other platforms since the early 80s, I appreciated that the Mac system software was overdue for a major overhaul and found the Terminal app extremely powerful and useful. As far as I am concerned, the matter regarding selection of non-contiguous text is closed. Thanks again to all who responded.

It was working fine. I have used it (Cmd-click) in TextEdit a lot over the last several years. I’ve used it to select and format non-contiguous sections of text over and over. I would not be using TextEdit at all if it didn’t support this feature. It also supports Option-select for selecting columns of text. The current version of the application is dated 10/18/2022…when I installed Ventura. I have used it daily since then. It only stopped working this morning.
