I can’t send text messages to non-iPhone users

I have network reset, checked my settings for cellular off, messages are turned on for iMessage, SMS, and MMS. Turned my phone off then on, nothing is working!!!!

I was on the line with Apple and they said I needed to do the iOS 16 so everything functions properly, nope! It still won’t send out text to those non- iPhone peep or responses to companies, even the system to my work.

help!!! Anyone? Ideas?

iPhone XR, iOS 16

You may want to try these steps: Open Settings > Messages then scroll down to Send As SMS. Turn it on. This should allow you to send SMS messages when iMessage is not available.

That setting has zero effect on sending messages to non-iPhone users. What turning that setting on does is, in the event an iMessage fails, it will be resent as an SMS. You can test this yourself by turning that setting off and sending a message to a non-iMessage user. I think Apple really could have done a better job explaining this setting.

There are actually no settings on an iPhone that turn SMS on or off. Only the carrier can do that.
