original item can't be found?
I've just upgraded from Catalina to Big Sur. AirDrop won't work now. I get a message that says, "AirDrop.app" can't be opened because the original item can't be found.
Mac mini 2018 or later

Apple Support figured it out. When I'd click on Air Drop in the Side Bar I'd get a message that the original couldn't be found. Yet, I could receive Air Drop files from another Mac. The fourth Apple Advisor guy I talked to realized the logo with the word "AirDrop" was the logo for the Applications folder instead of AirDrop. So corrupted link?
With other advisors I tried restarting the computer and reinstalling the OS, with no change. The final advisor had me delete AirDrop from the Side Bar (by clicking and dragging it away). Then the advisor had me then click on Finder/Preferences/Side Bar, check the AirDrop box and voila, life was back to normal!

Reinstall the macOS:
Go Here: How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery - Apple Support. Important: Be certain to create a backup of your Mac prior to all of this. That way, you can have something to restore from the Mac from, should anything go wrong with the reinstall. Once reinstalled, try this once more.
