I am trying to create optimized media for all of my files of a documentary. It works, but on one folder/event, I am only able to create proxies, not optimized files. The event contains drone footage froma a dji mini 2 - all other folders with the same filetype and same video settings work fine. I tried to delete all generated media files - no chance. Why is this folder not working?

It was my mistake. I had the same clips in different events in the same library. I was going through them one by one to create optimized media. So by the time I clicked transcode media on this folder, the clips were already in the render queue and so the option to create optimized media was greyed out. Sorry for the inconvenience..

Did the DJI drone capture in ProRes? If so, FCP treats this as optimized and won't offer the option.
If your Mac is struggling with these drone shots, what about creating proxies for them? Then choose Proxy Preferred in the Viewer while you're editing. When it's all edited and you're ready to export the final project, switch back to Optimized/Original media. Control playback quality in Final Cut Pro - Apple Support
Tom's request for an Etrecheck report is good advice to help get to the bottom of it, but if you're under deadline and need to get the project out, using proxies for these shots might help.
When you're redirected to the files, open one in QuickTime Player and post a screen shot of the info window that looks like this:
Could you select just one of the files and show the full info pane of the Inspector?
You’d better tell us about the whole system, maybe an EtreCheck report that includes OS and drive details. What version of FCP is this?
What's at the very bottom that shows where the file is stored?
Sorry, it looks like it should allow you to optimize. No idea what else to try at the moment, except maybe to make ProRes outside of FCP. But do you actually need to optimize? Is your mac struggle with this media otherwise?
I try not to use optimized media because in most cases it is not necessary, and creates humongous files.
It’s not ProRes yet, it’s h264. My MacBook is from mid 2012 an has three monitors attached, it’s struggling with the footage. It’s stored on my external ssd, if I click show in finder I get redirected to the files.
Its just greyed out. There is enough disk space available.

Thank you for circling back and posting the good news Peter. I'm always happy when a strange issue I'm having ends up just being a PEBKAC (problem exists between keyboard and chair). ;)
