How to get suggestions to misspelled words in Messenger for Mac OS?

I'm having a minor issue with Messenger.

Misspelled words are redlined (which I want), but suggestions do not come up when I right click on them. This is only for my desktop (which was recently wiped, and manually restored using Time Machine files - long story).

I get suggestions on other apps on the computer, like Pages or Safari, but not Messenger. I have restored right-clicking, which brings up a host of options, just not suggestions for other spellings. On other devices, like iPhone and the iPad, Messenger gives spelling suggestions, so I think it is a setting here on this computer for Messenger that I am missing, but I can't figure it out.

I don't want autocorrect on - there are a lot of words and phrases I use which should not be autocorrected. Any suggestions on how to restore suggestions?

PS I'm using OS Monterey 12.6.1.
