empty desktop and documents folders on my macbook pro

I'm not aware that I did anything, but my desktop and documents folders on my macbook are empty, and my desktop is bare, although the contents are on icloud. How do i get back a local copy and work with it in the usual way? I have Monterey 12.6.

many thanks. But I don't see, in these instructions, how to get the contents of the Desktop and Documents Folders back to my computer. Plus the Desktop and Documents Folders option is greyed out in the iCloud Drive options. It seems to be unticked, and it can't be changed.
