The first generation Apple Pencil originally included a Lightning to Lightning adapter - with which the Pencil could be charged using the then standard USB Type-A to Lightning charging cable. Old-stock first generation Pencil’s will only include this older adapter in box with the Pencil.

With release of the iPad10, new first generation Pencils include the new USB-C to Lightning adapter in the box.

If you have managed to purchase old stock, the special adapter that you need will not be included with the Pencil - however, the adapter is available as an accessory:

No one here works for Apple.

No one here knows when or if Apple will ship 1st gen Apple Pencils with the newer USB-C to Lightning adapter.

Apple still supplies the older Lightning to Lightning adapter because there are still a lot of iPads out in the world and in education that still use the 1st gen Apple Pencil with that supplied adapter.

You have the correct Apple Pencil you will just need to purchase the correct adapter that both I and LotusPilot supplied a link to.

The sooner you purchase and recieve this adapter, the sooner you can start charging and using that Apple Pencil.

Good Luck to You!

Thanks LotusPilot! I obviously have the older pencil being sold to fit the iPad 10th gen. Will Apple have the new pens soon. I hate to buy yet another adapter

If purchased new, then you perhaps acquired the Pencil from a retailer other than Apple. If purchased directly from Apple along with your iPad, you should have received the correct boxed Pencil with the Adapter.

If you did purchase directly from Apple, you have 14-days within which to unconditionally return your Pencil for exchange or refund; if purchased from Apple, an Apple Store may be able to simply swap the boxed-Pencil that you have for the newest that includes the adapter that you need.

There are multiple reports of the Adapter alone being in short supply in some regions. It is not uncommon for new devices and accessories to be difficult to find in the weeks after release to market.
